Art Villa: A Transparent and Elegant Residential House

Achieving Simplicity and Indifference in Urban Living

The Art Villa, designed by Lycent Lai, is a four-story residential house that embodies the principles of simplicity and transparency. Inspired by the desire for a natural and comfortable living environment, the designer created a space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

One of the unique features of the Art Villa is the removal of walls to maximize the advantages of the large space. Glass partitions are strategically placed to create a transparent and open atmosphere, allowing natural light to flood the interior. The clean lines and pure colors of the layout highlight the beauty of the structure itself.

The second floor serves as the main living area, combining the kitchen, dining room, and living room. The designer used rough raw materials such as stone and wood to create a sense of authenticity and return to the essence of life. The result is a space that is both inviting and true to its natural surroundings.

The Art Villa covers a total area of 380 square meters and includes various functional areas. The storage room and toilet, cleverly hidden behind invisible doors, add richness to the overall space without overwhelming it. The combination of a children's activity area and a courtyard ensures continuity and interest, while a separate studio provides a delicate and independent workspace for the hostess.

The simplicity and clarity of the space, along with the use of advanced gray tones in the master bedroom, create an atmosphere of solemnity and elegance. Despite the challenges posed by the low height and poor lighting of the basement, the designer turned these limitations into opportunities to create a comfortable and peaceful semi-open studio.

Throughout the design process, Lycent Lai adhered to the principle of "less is more," using raw materials and clean lines to bring out the pure essence of the space. The result is a design that embraces simplicity and indifference, reflecting the desire of urban dwellers for a slower and more meaningful life.

The Art Villa project began in March 2019 and was completed in July 2019 in Shanghai. It is a testament to the designer's dedication to creating spaces that not only meet functional requirements but also evoke a sense of tranquility and harmony.

The Art Villa has been recognized for its outstanding design and creativity, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that incorporate best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
